No, the GeneTests mission remains the same: the GeneTests Laboratory Directory promotes the appropriate use of genetic testing and its use in diagnosis, management, genetic counseling, and personal decision-making by providing current, easy to access information on test availability and links to GeneReviews. The GeneTests Clinic Directory provides easy to access information on genetic counseling services..
Has the GeneTests website changed?
Yes, we are rebuilding GeneTests from scratch and attempting to update the look of the site, search functions, and data display. The site currently has all of the clinical laboratory test listings and clinic listings posted on the former GeneTests site as of May 23, 2013.The site does not currently include the non-disease related testing/services of clinical laboratories, test-specific comments, or research laboratories, which we will publish when we are able. Our goal is to respond to past and future requests to add new user-friendly features and services to facilitate patient care.
How have search functions changed?
Searches for disorders, genes, and multi-gene panels are now supported by a single text box. For more information on the search features see navigation and search page.
Are multi-gene panels listed in the new GeneTests?
Yes, a Panel Directory has been added to the main navigation bar. All panels listed on the old GeneTests site are included in the Panel Directory. In addition, the text box search supports a panel search option. We plan to add more panel features and functions and welcome suggestions for improvement (genetests@genetests.org).
Is GeneTests still free?
Yes, GeneTests will continue to be freely available to all users. Laboratories will not be charged to list their tests, and clinics will not be charged to list their services.
When will labs and clinics be able to update existing listings and add new information? How will this be announced?
Once development of the necessary database infrastructure has been completed, we will be able to accept updates, revisions, and new test information. We will email all GeneTests labs and clinics when these options are available.
When will new laboratories and clinics be able to list in GeneTests?
Once development of the necessary database infrastructure has been completed, we will post an open invitation for new laboratory and clinic listings on the GeneTests site. Use Contact Us if you would like to be notified once we can accept requests to list new laboratories and clinics.
Are GeneTests policies regarding revisions and annual laboratory and clinic updates the same?
Yes, once a new GeneTests administrative website is completed, laboratories and clinics will be able to revise their data at any time. A comprehensive update will be required annually.
Are GeneTests policies regarding information about diseases and genes the same?
Yes, the GeneTests staff will continue to review and edit information about diseases and genes to adhere to universal standards (when available) and to assure internal consistency of information.
Will GeneTests continue to list research laboratories?
Yes, but not immediately. Due to time limitations, we were not able to incorporate research listings in the first iteration of the new GeneTests but we plan to include them in the future.
Will consumer resources (e.g., disease registries and support organizations) be listed in the new GeneTests Web site?
Consumer resources are not retrieved as search results in the new GeneTests; however, many of the registries and organizations previously listed in GeneTests can be found in the Resources section of GeneReviews.
How can I suggest improvements for the new GeneTests site?
